Help us protect the animal victims of domestic abuse

The Problem

Abusers often threaten or harm pets to control their partners and to stop them from leaving. This is called ‘coercive control’ and takes advantage of the strong connection between people and animals.

However, police officers don’t receive mandatory training to recognise this type of abuse, leaving both human and animal victims unprotected.

What We’re Doing

We’re working to protect animals harmed by domestic violence. Thanks to our efforts, all 43 police forces in England and Wales now provide information on their websites about how abusers also harm animals. Now, we’re pushing for policy changes and training.

How You Can Help

Write to your Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and ask them to ensure police officers receive mandatory training to protect animals in coercive control cases.

Every year, 2.4 million adults in the UK experience domestic abuse. In 2024, 60% of UK households had a pet. These animals are family and deserve protection.

Together, we can keep both people and animals safe.
